Values

that lasts a lifetime

SISTERHOOD

One of the things Alpha Phis cherish most is our sisterhood made up of life-long friendships. Friendships that are rooted in kindness with respect for one another. Over the course of the year, the Programming & Education Department puts together fun and exciting sisterhood events for the chapter. From roller-skating in our best 60s throwback outfits to movie nights at the lodge, our chapter is always providing opportunities to bring our sisterhood together.

SCHOLARSHIP

the common bond of

Scholarship is one of our most important values, and we encourage our members to achieve their highest potential. Every semester, Alpha Phi puts on a Scholarship Banquet to recognize members who have excelled in academics. As a chapter, we make an effort to provide sisters with all of the resources they need succeed not just in academics, but being well-rounded women.

LEADERSHIP

being someone to look up to

Our members not only hold leadership positions within Alpha Phi, but we are also actively involved in organizations on campus. With the many organizations to be part of at Texas Tech, you can find an Alpha Phi anywhere on campus! Alpha Phi International’s mission is to cultivate leadership development for its members by providing numerous leadership growth programs designed to give members the tools and skills to be the best version of themselves.

SERVICE

hand to hand heart to heart

Since Alpha Phi International was one of the first women’s fraternities to have its own Foundation, The Alpha Phi Foundation, philanthropy is something very close to our hearts. Our Foundation is dedicated to advancing leadership development, encouraging academic excellence, and improving women’s heart health. To support these efforts, our chapter hosts a food truck festival, “Taste of Texas,” as well as Hug-A-Bear. Serving the local community is another passion of our chapter, participating in Lubbock’s Heart Walk, Cards for Kids, and the local Boy and Girls Club.

LOYALTY

the bond of

Alpha Phi believes in sisterhood expands far beyond our four years in college, it’s for a lifetime. Loyalty is a great part of who we are as a chapter and a sisterhood. Connections and love for one another provide our members with networks, character development, and watch-care from the college years into adulthood.

CHARACTER

Alpha Phi fosters the qualities of strong character that distinguish our members and our sisterhood, including compassion, integrity and sincerity. In Alpha Phi, all members learn to lead by example through their actions and communication. They set expectations high for themselves and each other, and strive diligently to meet them.

Purpose

“The objects of our fraternity are the promotion of growth in character, unity of feeling, sisterly affection, and social communion among our members. In all that we do, we try to obey God’s principles of justice and right. We have banded ourselves together to improve our minds and hearts, and we seek to aid each other through a constant watchcare always given in love. We believe in ourselves to be sincere searchers for truth. We seek the highest ideal of womanhood, and we try to gain this ideal by cultivating not only the power and passion for seeking intellectual development but, also, the spirit of love and charity. And we who are thus united are under a solemn pledge to lend a helping hand to one another.”

Recent News

Two years ago, our lodge underwent a $1.5 million renovation. We were able to celebrate this new beginning at our Ribbon Cutting Ceremony during our 60th Anniversary. Our alumnae, active members, donors, and local Texas Tech faculty were invited to attend to see Alpha Phi's new home.

The project was made possible with the generous financial support of alumnae and collegiate chapter members. The building now boasts a new entrance, expanded formal rooms and restrooms, a new kitchen, new study areas, state-of-the-art technology throughout the building, new offices, a chapter room which can accommodate over 250 members, and a workroom for projects. We cannot wait to host future events in our new home!

Go ahead, take a peek! It's as beautiful in pictures as it is in person!

Facts

SYMBOL:

The ivy leaf is perhaps our most recognizable symbol. The ivy leaf is reflected in our new member pin and is part of our crest. Ivy symbolizes the intertwining of intellectual, philanthropic and social pursuits. It is also symbolic of the way in which our lives become intertwined with one another's as we become friends and sisters in Alpha Phi.

FLOWERS:

The flowers of Alpha Phi are the Lily-of the-Valley and the sentimental Forget-Me-Not. The blue and gold of the forget-me-not remind us of our fraternity's original colors. This flower also reminds Alpha Phis to always remember their sisters.

COAT of ARMS:

The Fraternity Crest is the Alpha Phi coat-of-arms, adopted by Convention delegates in 1922. The shield is Bordeaux with a scroll and ivy leaf above it. Inscribed on the scroll is the public motto, "Union Hand In Hand." A bar of silver crosses the shield from left to right; the upper half of the shield contains a Roman lamp in silver and the lower half, Ursa Major.

MASCOT:

Our mascot is the "Phi Bear," whose name is taken from the Greek words "Ursa Major," or the "Great Bear." Alpha Phi International adopted the Phi Bear as its mascot in 1974.
